Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder:  Updated:05/10 Created:04/94
(OCD) is an illness that causes people to have unwanted thoughts (obsessions) and to repeat certain behaviors (compulsions) over and over again. We all have habits and routines in our daily lives, such as brushing our teeth before bed. However, for people with OCD, patterns of behavior get in the way of their daily lives. Yes they do!!! This is so true true true!!

Obsessions are ideas, images and impulses that run through the person's mind over and over again. A person with OCD doesn't want to have these thoughts and finds them disturbing, but he or she can't control them. Disturbing? You try washing your hands 100x a day, you will find that very disturbing. My girlfriend gets mad at me because we go through paper towels like as if we had our own "tree killer business".

Obsessive thoughts make people who have OCD feel nervous and afraid.
Well now that they do mention it, I do get a little nervous. I'm just "concerned" "everyday" that we may run out of trees one day and where in the hell will we get our paper towels? I'll have to start using a wash cloth.... Oh great that only means more laundry money, detergent .... quarters ... and I'll probably get stuck carrying the hamper to the laundrymat. Ugh I don't like that.

They try to get rid of these feelings by performing certain behaviors according to "rules" that they make up for themselves. These behaviors are called compulsions. (Compulsive behaviors are sometimes also called rituals.) For example, a person who has OCD may have obsessive thoughts about germs. Because of these thoughts, the person may wash his or her hands repeatedly.
Oh great, these people have been watching me. I bet it's a hidden camera somewhere. Its funny that maintenance showed up when we called them.

Performing these behaviors usually only makes the nervous feelings go away for a short time. When the fear and nervousness return, the person who has OCD repeats the routine all over again.

For many years, OCD was thought to be rare. Some recent studies show that as many as 3 million Americans ages 18 to 54 may have OCD at any one time.
And that means probably everybody at work has it!! Hahaha "I got you suckers". And my boss said I'm the only one that wipes my desk down 50x a day. They wanted to start charging me for wipes at work! That is not my fault there is dust in the air. They need to talk to God!! I did not put dust in the air!!!!

People who have OCD often have other kinds of anxiety, like phobias (such as fear of spiders or fear of flying) or panic attacks. I only panic if they sit in my desk! I fear they may leave germs or crumbs on my keyboard. I'm just being safe, dad always use to say "better safe than sorry".

People who have OCD also may have depression, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), an eating disorder or a learning disorder such as dyslexia. ThAT iz "EURT" sometimes ... mmm I smell pizza.

Having one or more of these disorders can make diagnosis and treatment more difficult, so it's important to talk to your doctor about any symptoms you have, even if you're embarrassed. Make it difficult? Hell that's why they went to school and chose that profession. Who told them it was going to be easy, they should be embarrassed, not me. I know what I have ... now just treat it. *#!$%?

How is OCD treated?
Combining therapy with medication is usually considered the most effective way to treat OCD. My method of treatment is "stay the hell away from me if you see me freaking out, stay out my seat and I'll be back in a minute as soon as I grab another bite to eat and wash my hands". Does anybody have a napkin?
